FIRST Robots: Behind the Design

.  .  .

2015 Book Edition

The 30 robots and design teams featured in the latest edition are exemplars: a collection of the finest machines in the 2015 FIRST Robotics Competition. Team profiles document the design, manufacturing, and control processes that converted innovative ideas into sophisticated, high-performing robots. Proven methodologies are described to showcase advanced technology and provide an intimate understanding of what it takes to design, manufacture, and control a FIRST robot. The technical chapters are separated by brief narratives illustrating the rewards of participating in FIRST from the individual, community, and corporate perspectives.

The 2015 book was created as a volunteer effort, taking only four months to complete all research, develop content, format layout and cover design, and edit the final product. The condensed timeline to progress from concept to final product was necessary to support distribution of a copy in each Kit of Parts to over 3,000 teams worldwide in time for the 2016 FRC Kickoff. I contributed to creative decisions on outreach and promotion, and also developed the marketing and online sales strategy with retailers.

What is FIRST?

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded by inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen to inspire young people to participate in science and technology. The organization has designed a variety of accessible, innovative programs for students that build not only science and technology know-how, but also self-confidence, knowledge, and leadership skills.
